I've been using BJU history and reading this year for the first time. I was excited about learning subjects with a strong Biblical influence and world view, but both
myself and my kids were bored stiff. Have chosen to be creative and do
something else to supplement and use Library books for the next
semester, however, does anyone have any suggestions of exciting, yet
Biblical World View oriented curricula that can preferably be done at
an individual study bases since I teach multiple levels/grades? Thank
you. Any help would be appreciated.

We have been using the Story of the World: History for the Classical Child by Susan Wise Bauer. It is not an explicitly Christian curriculum in how things are presented. However, Bauer is a Christian and so things are presented from a world view and in a way that is not anti-christian in my experience. We have really enjoyed the first three volumes: Ancient Times, Middle Ages, Early Modern Times, we are struggling more with The Modern Age. This 4th volume is definately geared to being used with late grade school kids and we are finding it a bit dry and the reading and activity suggestions are not as fun or as multi age usable which means we have been doing fewer of them or I am doing more prep work to adjust things and find my own books to read in conjunction. The thing I really liked about the first books was that they gave to good overview of the period and world cultures (not just Eurocentric) and map and coloring sheets and other activities for each chapter. There were also good multi age suggested reading lists (though being me I always had others I found to add too). It might be worth looking at I found that it worked fine and that I was able to bring in our own Christian perspective as we went, this also meant that we all go practice in doing that.
ReplyDeleteHope this helps, feel free to contact me with additional questions about it.
I know some people in the Group use Tapestry of Grace, it looks cool to me but I haven't really used it maybe one of them will weigh in, if not I will tweek one of them to do so.
If you wanted to add some History of the Chruch type component to a curriculum that was not expelicitly Christian there is a nice new series by Mindy and Brandon Withrow called "History Lives" it is 5 volumes that could be used as a read aloud or independantly depending on the reading ability and interest of the child Here is a link to Westminster book store for more info. http://www.wtsbooks.com/product-exec/product_id/4794/nm/History+Lives+%285+Volume+Set%29+%28Paperback%29
